How She Gets to Bed is a deep dive into how women who kick ass during the day spend their night. Tonight, we’re elated to feature Trisha Okubo, founder of Maison Miru, a direct-to-consumer jewelry brand that is jewelry for dreamers, thinkers and makers: jewelry that gives you the joy of creating things. She designed their jewelry as a vehicle for self-expression and creativity, with building block pieces you can wear on their own or pair together to create something new.

Each piece is designed with meaning and intention as a modern heirloom, a time-honored keeper of memories that captures and celebrates your personal story. They’re best known for our signature Ear Bar, where you can create your own ear party (#letsearparty) with mix-and-match studs, hoops, flat back piercing earrings, and no-piercing-required cuffs, and our Secrets & Stories collection of interchangeable charms featuring emblems of love, luck, hope and happiness. Without further ado, here is how she gets to bed. 💤

Background

Industry: Fashion
Occupation: Founder and Creative Director of Maison Miru
Location: New York, NY
Awake by: 6:30 AM (Now that I have a newborn!)
Asleep by: 11:00 PM (A far cry from my former 2am bedtime)

On the Day-to-Day

I spend time doing anything from designing to working with our manufacturing and creative partners to sourcing fun new snacks for the studio — really, anything and everything to make sure the business is operating smoothly. On a very good day, I get to play with prototyping new designs, do a deep dive into something new over in the Art & Architecture room at the NYPL, or best of all, connect with our lovely community of customers about the stories behind their jewels (and maybe trade some snack recs). I love a good story — and a good snack.

Activities to Relax

There’s nothing I love more than a good story, so if I have a moment, I’ll have my nose in a good book — especially works by women authors. I have a thing for memoirs and personal essays, particularly because they’re easy to pick up and put down. On my nightstand is Emilie Pine’s Notes to Self, Chloe Caldwell’s I’ll Tell You in Person, and Rachel Cusk’s A Life’s Work.

Products to Get Unready

I’ve always been low-key about my nighttime routine, and that’s especially true now that I have a newborn. My routine is just three products: DHC Deep Cleansing Oil (because it’s moisturizing and cleansing all at once!), moisturizer from LaMer (lightweight and not too oily!) and eye cream from Laneige (you can never have too much eye cream).

I also love my washable silk sleep set from Lunya. I love supporting other woman-owned brands, and their ethos of sleepwear that makes you feel good totally resonates with me. I do some of my best work at night, and I love how comfortable their designs are. Plus, the washable silk has totally stood up to everything the baby has thrown at it.

Late Night Snacks

I’m an equal opportunity snacker day and night, and I can never get enough tea and chocolate. I’m powered by tea, which I get from 29B Teahouse — they have a fantastic puerh and matcha selection. I sometimes make my own chocolate from cacao beans (my favorites are beans from Madagascar), and I’ve been stocking up on the chocolates at Stick With Me — both their flavor combinations and bon bon designs exemplify chocolate creativity at its finest. My uber-indulgence is pie — and Petee’s Pie is thankfully open for late night pie emergencies (get the black bottom almond pie!). Everything looks better after pie 🥧.

Nighttime Routine

5:00 PM — It’s baby feeding time! My daughter has a healthy appetite and eats round the clock — leading us to nickname her the “Milk Monster”. She goes down for a nap after her early evening meal, after which we figure out what we’re eating for dinner.

7:00 PM— I used to cook, but lately, we’ve been ordering in delivery. Some of our pandemic favorites have been Cote (fancypants Korean steak — their wedge salad, Cote steak, and galbi are just as good delivered as they are in the restaurant), Fiaschetteria Pistoia (Tuscan food FTW — their Cacio e Pepe Pici and Zucchini flan are winners), and Forsythia (Roman style pastas, amazing veggie salads, and the most delicious focaccia). Dinner is where I get some much-needed quality time with my husband.

8:00 PM — Time to catch up on work — answering emails, checking in to make sure the team has everything they need, and collaborating with our creative partners all around the world. If I’m very lucky, I’ll have some time to dig into some creative work.

10:00 PM — My nighttime routine: washing my face, moisturizing, and putting on eye cream. I check in on the baby, then it’s time to read in bed.

11:00 PM — I’m a night owl by nature, and I used to go to sleep closer to 2am, but lately, I’ve been finding myself face-planted on my book by 11pm — or earlier. Time to turn off the lights and dream about new creative projects. I’m working on an apartment renovation, so lately, I’ve been working on some home goods designs for fun, including a bespoke rug for my daughter’s room.
