How She Gets to Bed is a deep dive into how women who kick ass during the day spend their night. Tonight, we’re so pleased to feature Tara Elwell Henning, co-founder of Superkin. Superkin is NOT a maternity brand and is on a mission to challenge the outdated narratives of pregnancy and reinvent the narrative to celebrate her unwavering badassery and indisputable transformation. Without further ado, here is how she gets to bed. 💤

About Superkin

At Superkin, we are passionate about changing the way modern motherhood is experienced. I had my first daughter at 34 and was a director at a fast-growing startup. My career had always been my primary focus. With my background in retail (Louis Vuitton, Walmart alumna) and focus on the quickly evolving retail landscape, I saw there was a missing link between what the maternity category reflected vs what my generation was actually experiencing. Miriam and I created Superkin to bring quality fabrics and styles to bad-ass, multi-mastering women!

Tara’s Background

Industry: Retail
Occupation: Co-founder — everything!
Age: 39
Location: San Francisco Bay Area, CA
Awake by: 6:30 AM
Asleep by: 11:00 PM

On the Day-to-Day

I wake up at 6:30 AM and check email, news, etc. I have two girls, Alexandra (5.5) and Taylor (3.5 yo) Then from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM, I get them ready and out the door for school. By 8:30 AM, I’m either working out, or I start working, depending on the day’s meeting.

Since I’m now WFH, I try to work out first thing or take it as a mid-day break- either Peloton or hike (I’m in dreamy Sausalito CA, just at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge & Pacific Ocean). I’m lucky my kids are in school this year, so I can work from my office (tons of windows and great light!) with relatively little interruption. The day usually entails a variety of tasks — chats with my co-founder, Miriam, emails and calls with existing and new brand partners, content creation (email, blogs, social), deep dive into our sales, website CX, etc. I love finding new, relevant people and brands to connect with Superkin.

Activities to Relax

From work, I go straight into time with the kids — dinner, reading or a board game then bedtime (whew!). After the kids are down, I usually do a number of things — catch up on work, reading the news/articles (I have about 20 tabs open on my laptop) while watching a show. My 2021 goal is to ditch the phone outside of my room at night and read more!

Products to Get Unready

Aside from the obvious — brush teeth and wash my face — my skincare routine varies based on my mood and what I need. I’m obsessed with different face oils (True Botanicals or Tata Harper) and usually use a straight up retinoid. You also can’t go wrong with a Skinceuticals combo of the CE Ferulic & Hydrating B5 set. I also love experimenting with different hand lotions — currently loving Skin Food from Weleda or Jao Goe Oil (from Goop). Another luxury is the Slip Pure Silk eye masks!

Late Night Snacks

Try not to snack but if I do, an apple or rice cake with peanut butter!

Nighttime Routine

6:00 PM–8:00 PM — Kids time (Dinner, clean up, play a game or read books, showers/bath, bed!)

8:30 PM— Hang out, relax with a show or movie while scouring the internet, researching for Superkin and hanging out with husband.

11:00 PM — Bedtime!
