How She Gets to Bed: Taly Matiteyahu, Founder of Blink
How She Gets to Bed is a deep dive into how women who kick ass during the day spend their night. Tonight, we’re so delighted to feature Taly Matiteyahu, founder of Blink, a virtual blind speed dating app whose objective is to build a dating space where a person’s personality, values, sense of humor, passions, and quirks are what set them apart — not their looks, name, or fashion choices. Without further ado, here is how she gets to bed. 💤
About Blink
By night, I work to build Blink, a virtual blind speed dating app inspired by a revelatory experience at a blackout restaurant. Making connections with strangers based on conversation alone, free of looks-driven assumptions, sparked the thought: would people date a wider variety of people and find more satisfying relationships if they were able to make an emotional connection with someone before swiping left? In 2020, I finally began turning the vision into reality and hope to change online dating’s looks-first paradigm and, one day, move the concept beyond the dating world. By day, I work at an AI-powered legal tech company as a Product Manager, having previously worked as a lawyer at a NYC law firm and as a legal operations professional at Netflix and Datadog. I earned my Bachelor’s degree from New York University in 2011 and my Juris Doctorate from Columbia Law School in 2015.
Taly’s Background
Industry: I’m a lawyer by education, but left legal practice for a career in legal operations before transitioning to product management at a legal tech company. Outside of my day job, I dipped my toes into the dating and relationship industry with Blink.
Occupation: Founder of Blink
Age: 31
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Awake by: I’m not a morning person and waking up is one of my least favorite parts of the day, so I usually end up sleeping in as much as I can. On weekdays, with our work-from-home life, I’m able to wake up around 8 AM squeeze in a quick bike/yoga workout, and be ready for my workday by 9 AM.
Asleep by: Given the need to balance my day job and Blink, I tend to stay up late and don’t get to bed until around 1:30 AM to 2 AM.
On the Day-to-Day
I usually wrap up my day job sometime between 5:30pm and 6:30pm, after which I turn to my work on Blink. Some days I focus on the tech side of the house: I meet with our developer, test our alpha build, update our website, and play with our analytics software. Other days I’m up to my ears in marketing, building email campaigns, engaging on social media, creating Instagram posts, drafting press pieces, and finding new marketing channels. Peppered throughout are hours spent digging into tax issues and all things legal and finance that need to be sussed out when building a startup from scratch. As you can imagine, each day working on Blink is an adventure. That’s honestly one of the best parts about starting your own company — you get to do and learn so much!
Activities to Relax
Between my day job and Blink, it can be hard to transition out of work mode. My mind is always racing and thinking of the many things I need to get done, so I have to consciously set aside time to disconnect in order to properly unplug and transition out of work mode. My favorite method is yoga — I’ve been practicing yoga at home for almost five years now (thank heavens for Yoga with Adriene!) Even if I don’t always succeed in making my mind stop racing, I make sure I have that daily time on the mat to focus on my body and breath.
I also love watching TV and will often have something on while eating dinner (recently wrapped up Bridgerton and Kim’s Convenience!) It’s a great way to get out of my bubble and mind!
Products to Get Unready
I have a pretty-low key evening routine. I brush my teeth, floss, tell my pups I love them, and crawl into bed. I try to get 10–15 minutes of reading in right before I go to sleep. It helps slow my mind down and empty it of the many thoughts that filled it throughout the day.
With that said … I confess that occasionally I’ll let TikTok do that mind-clearing and scroll through pet Tok for a few minutes before calling it a day.
Late Night Snacks
Homemade vanilla chocolate chip ice cream. We got an ice cream maker back in 2012 and it’s one of the best kitchen appliances we ever purchased. After some trial and error, we perfected our recipe (which has about 25% of the sugar most recipes recommend, so I don’t feel so guilty about my late night treat) — we eat a scoop every night. Sometimes my partner also bakes chocolate chip cookies, so we’ll have both — those nights are my favorites!
Nighttime Routine
7:00 PM — Have a snack (e.g. tortilla chips with melted cheese or tomato slices with cheese)
8:30 PM-8:45 PM — Take a shower
8:45 PM-9:30PM — Work on Blink
9:30 PM-10:30 PM — Dinner
10:30 PM-12:30 AM — Work on Blink
12:30 AM-1:30 AM — Clean up the apartment (clear up the kitchen, put dog toys away, etc.), get ready for bed, & read a bit
