How She Gets to Bed is a deep dive into how women who kick ass during the day spend their night. Tonight, we’re thrilled to feature, Nina Clark, the founder of Nightire, a sleepwear brand that strives to make sleepwear functional, affordable, and beautiful. Without further ado, here is how she gets to bed. 💤

About Nightire

Nightire was born out of a personal quest to understand sleep, and all that it entails, a bit better … Like many folks I know, I have this thing called can’t-always-shut-my-brain-off-to-go-to-sleep syndrome. I overthink everything and am that person who constantly makes lists in my head and who worries about things that I can’t change; all while lying in bed at night waiting for sleep to set in. This led to a few years of having a rather patchy sleep routine.

I began doing research into what could help a person sleep better and tried to apply it in my nightly routine: using black-out blinds, taking a relaxing bath, using no screens in the room (i.e. goodbye to Insta-sessions right before bed), and trying anything I could to keep my body temperature on an even keel. That included buying the right sleepwear, which, in turn, got me to focus on an industry that seemed like it had some room for innovation (and a bit more personality), which is how the idea for Nightire came about. To create sleepwear that was functional, beautiful and affordable.

The sleepwear industry is tired. And I was tired of it. I wanted to create a sleepwear brand that could bring some passion back to bed-time fashion and appealing to customers with pure character, stand-out prints and a relatable tone of voice. I also aimed to create a brand that had a bit more substance to it than just nice prints and a comfy cut (although Nightire definitely ticks those boxes too)!

Activities to Relax

Distraction/entertainment is key, in order for me to switch off from my constant thoughts around Nightire, which often blurs the lines between life and work. So! Netflix, reading, or catching up with family all help with that. I put my screens away about an hour before bed, start dimming the lights, read a few pages of my book and always have a notebook next to my bed to jot down thoughts and to-do’s that might plague me in the night and keep my mind from shutting down.

Products to Get Unready

My two go-to products are a pillow mist (my favourite is REN sleep spray), which I mist over my pillowcase and the top of my duvet every night — to calm me down and make my linen smell fresh every time.

Also, my super soft Nightire bamboo eyemask. I cannot fall asleep without it. The eyemask blocks out all light but I find the more important function of it is the weight on my face that helps signal to my body that it’s sleep time.

Late Night Snacks

I don’t snack at night — I try have a hearty supper about 3 hours before bed so it fills me up until morning (but always end off the meal with a few blocks of chocolate). 🍫

Nighttime Routine

6:00–7:00PM — Exercise, if I don’t get to it in the morning

7:00PM–8:00PM — Supper

8:00PM–8:30 PM — Check last few emails and admin off the to do list

8:30PM–10:00PM — Netflix and reading my book

10:00PM — Start the bedtime routine of washing my face & brushing teeth, cleaning the house, planning for the next day, changing into my Nightire PJs and then jumping into bed for more reading & perhaps some journaling, then spraying my pillow with a linen mist and popping my Nightire eyemask on. I also set my Lumie light to start dimming half hour before bed (it mimics the sunrise and sunset) which also signals to my body that it’s time for sleep.
